How To Care For Snake Plant At Home
Growing Snake plant at home is pretty much easy provided you take control of couple of things, this plant doesn't need day to day care, but once in a while doing the following will help the plant grow well and also produce more pups.
Container
Golden tip to grow healthy snake plant is to grow multiple plants in one pot. Hence it is advisable to opt for smaller pot and multiple plants in a single pot.
Light
Snake plant needs some amount of sunlight, if not everyday but atleast 5-6 days in a week.
It can grow in low light or even under artificial lights in the room but total darkness will kill the plant totally.
Watering
Watering Snake plant schedule is different for indoor and outdoor location, plant size, potting mix, no. of plants and the planter.
Indoor snake plant
While growing snake plant indoors always consider watering after the potting mix has dried up completely. This could be once in a month with 3 to 4 plants in a 4 inch pot with potting mix as mentioned below.
Outdoor snake plant
Snake plant grown outside will need frequent watering but not everyday. In a 4 inch pot with average of 3-4 plants you can opt to water once in a week. In summers you can opt to water once in 3 days.
Fertilizer
Snake plant doesn't demand much fertilizer when kept outdoors, but indoors since the plant receives limited amount of sunlight, fertilizers is a must. Listed below are the fertilizers that can be used to fertilize Snake plant
1. Cow dung fertilizer
2. Vermicompost
3. Sea weed fertilizer
4. Kitchen waste compost
5. tea leaf fertilizer
Add any one of the above fertilizer to the plant post watering the plant throughly.
Potting Mix
A well drained potting mix is must to grow Snake plant, especially if you are growing the plant indoors under low lights.
Below is the best potting mix that can be used
3 part of cocopeat
1 part of perlite or rice hull or pumice stone
1 part compost
1 part of garden soil (non clay type)
